The government and mortgage lenders have been studying the economy closely and the effects of the credit crunch as it pertains to the overall mortgage industry. In several surveys including one completed by the Homelessness Charity Shelter action needs to be taken in order to help those struggling with repayments on mortgages in order to stop the affects of the last few months and especially the entire issues of last year.
The shelter is seeing that a number of individuals are seeking help because their mortgages have increased beyond their means and there doesn’t seem to be anything they can do to get the interest rate lowered. In 2007, the shelter was contacted by 80,000 borrowers seeking help. This is up from the previous year by 70,000 borrowers. This is a startling amount of inquiries in just a twelve month period.
It seems that the shelter is pinpointing the mortgages and repossessions sections of banks in the trouble area. It seems that many of the home owners felt there was inadequate information regarding what they could do to save themselves, and quickly lost their home rather than finding help to work out the issues. In fact there seems to be a lack of independent advice.
Losing Your Home
There are more than one million UK residents that are in danger of losing their home because of the economy slowdowns and the high interest rates. It seems that the Council of Mortgage Lenders believes in 2008 there will be a 50% increase in home losses. This means that this number is going to increase by 50% of what it was last year, causing panic among many of the homeowners who are just beginning to struggle with their mortgages or enter into a non fixed term with their mortgage deal. The shelter is asking that the government take action before it is too late for many of these home owners. They are especially worried about such things as the subprime crisis that just hit the US this last year.
The shelter does not want to see the UK market turn worse, and believes that if the government will join in the fray to lower the interest rates and provide a rescue scheme many of the UK residents will be able to stay in their homes and get help with their financial difficulties. The FSA wants to extend power over the lenders who are irresponsible and who sold customers unaffordable products.
Repossessions
Adam Sampson who runs the Charity Shelter has seen an increase in the amount of people that are seeking help with mortgage problems. Many of them have lost their homes or are in the process of losing their homes to repossession and the numbers are going to continue to rise if nothing is done. The state help for the UK is not available for these borrowers that are struggling and Sampson is hoping this can be changed or that some form of government will step in to help change the actual projections and the people of the UK.
Things that are affecting the mortgages and how individuals can deal with them are varied. First there are ways to get the interest repayments covered for about 39 weeks, but this doesn’t always help since it doesn’t cover the entire amount owed. Then there is the mortgage protection insurance that offers a limited cover, but for most the payout is for a year and there is strict policies regarding how it can work. Overall there are going to be struggling homeowners that can’t get back on their feet because these supposed techniques to help are actually hindering the process.
