There are several grants in the UK that are not obtained every year. The reason for this is that many UK residents don’t know about the grants or believe they do not qualify. If you are interested in grants you should realize they are not just for students, businesses, or environmental needs. In fact there is a separate section of grants for just homes. You can obtain a grant to purchase a home or at least towards the purchase of a new home if you know where to look. You will find such topics as how to obtain the grant, what types of grants, and of course a description of each below.
The most important aspect of grants is understanding what one is and how it can help you. A grant is money or a voucher for money that will be used towards a specific purpose. The grant will not always cover the entire cost of the item you are purchasing. Usually a grant is to encourage you to buy something from a specific place. Most grants deal with property, education expenses or protecting the environment.
Home Improvement
The first type of grant we will discuss is the home improvement grant. I bet you didn’t know that there is a grant to help you improve your home. Many of us want to help reduce our heating bill or fix a portion of our home. Most of the grants for home improvement are going to centre on improving the home for environmental purposes. For example in the US there is a grant you can obtain to remove asbestos siding from your home. In the UK you have a grant that works for energy saving improvements.
If you have decided to become environmental about your home so that you are more energy efficient there are companies that will allow you to obtain a grant for that purpose. The government will supply an energy supplier like a window company that specializes in better windows to keep the heat inside that they in turn will grant to you. For example the Government’s Energy Saving Trust lists many grants that you can find. One place that has grants is Warm Front. They offer 2,700 pounds to homeowners who rent from a private landlord. This money is then used to help the person fix the home for more energy efficiency. The heat project is another from Enact Energy that allows grants for lofts and cavity wall insulation to homeowners and tenants trying to keep the heat inside and use less energy.
For those who are elderly, disabled, or have a low income there are other grants for local home improvement. These grants will help to improve your home by repairing it or maintaining it. You can also find grants for adapting your home. The assistance in this case can help you put in furniture or even start a garden.
The disabled facilities grant is just one of the grants you can obtain if you are disabled or have someone in your home that is disabled. The grant helps on home improvements as well.
The last type of grant for home improvement falls under the utility arrears category. For instance if you have had issues paying your gas, electric or water bills you can apply for a grant or assistance program that helps you pay off the debt. British Gas Energy Trust is just one place you can look.
Education
Grants for education are another type of voucher you can seek. There are several loans and grants that are offered privately and through the government to find you funding for your college education. Grants are obviously the cheapest way to fund your secondary education. The loans are going to be the second best option as you do have to pay those back with interest. If you are interested in secondary education there are several places you can go to search for scholarships, loans, and grants.
The Student Money database is one of the largest to supply you with the information you need to get your money for college. There are specific grants, loans, and scholarships for your religion, location, parental occupation, which hand you write with, and more.
The education Grants Advisory Service is another place that you can look for special grants. These grants tend to be for disadvantaged students needing a helping hand to get into the college for further education and training. There are over 1200 different grants available for the disadvantaged student.
There are also many other types of grants and offers. If you are sixteen and would like to continue your education you have the Government’s Education Maintenance Allowance that allows for 30 pounds a week and up to five hundred pounds during your studies. This is awarded to those with a family income less than 30, 817 pounds a year. It is a “Get Paid To Study” program offered.
In Scotland there are grants available if you earn less than 18,000 pounds a year. You can receive 200 pounds a year for your secondary education through the ILA Scotland grant. It helps to provide you with course that can be taken in a variety of places such as training companies, colleges, and universities.
There are also grants for having better math and English skills. If you are trying to establish a better education in math or English there are courses you can take that are free to help you get your skills to a higher level so that you can get a better income from the education.
Individual Grants
Since there are so many different grants available to you and your family you will also find there are some on an individual level specifically for certain benefits. If you earn less than 66,000 pounds in a year you can find benefits that help you and your families. To see if you are eligible you can look up the Five Minute Benefit Check- Up. This website will help you decide if you are eligible for certain types of assistance.
If you are entitled to benefits you may be able to get grants as well as an allowance or pension credit. The grants will be based on your local area and benefits office.
Here are a few examples of individual grants you may be eligible for:
The Maternity Grant helps you to buy clothes and other needs for the new born baby. While it will not cover clothes for you if you have trouble paying for a crib or other baby essentials such as diapers the grant can help you.
The Cold Weather Payments grant allows you to find help for gas and electric costs that you have. It will help you pay the bills during the coldest months of the year. This grant is available for anyone over sixty. There are other ways you can get help for gas and electric costs if you are younger than sixty. If you apply for this grant you will find that the payment option helps no matter how much energy or gas you use. You just have to be of the right age to qualify.
The Community Care Grant offers to help pay you when you can’t afford specific items or expenses because of your lower income.
Another great grant available is the school clothing grant. This grant helps you supply clothing for your children if you make less than 14,495 pounds per year.
Other Grants
If you are an organisation there are also grants for you. There are of course specific guidelines that your organisation must fall under in order to be awarded the grants, but the good news is you can get the help you need.
The business grants are to help you if you need start up costs for a business. You will find the Grants and Support Directory online can help you find grants for a majority of business ventures depending on your current financial status.
There are also awards in the National Lottery that will offer between 300 to 10,000 pounds depending on where you live that help individual’s take part in sports, art, and other community activities they would generally not be able to afford.
There are four websites that offer grants if you are looking to supplement your income for a time for a specific purpose. Grantsnet, Grantnet, J4bgrants, and Grantsonline are the four websites you can search. You also have the option of searching Government funding and Fund Finder online. The fund finder is a UK charity that offers grants for individuals, community groups, and other organisations.
Lastly when looking for grants you can try your local council grants. Many of the local council organisations have grants they will award based on need.
As you can see there are hundreds of different grants you may be eligible for depending on your needs. If you need to fix your home, get a secondary education, or just supplement your income for a time there are grants you can apply for. Keep in mind that some grants are only offered once and they may negate the other grants you could get later on. It is very important that you research all of the grant types in the area you need help to determine what will be best for you. Most of the grants are for those in the lower income bracket, but not all of them will be.
Some of the grants mentioned above have very specific needs for eligibility. Some grants are dependent on the income you make. If your income exceeds the requirement you will have to keep searching for a grant that will help you.
Other grants mentioned above have an age limit. In fact the gas and electric grant requires that you are above a certain age in order to qualify. Don’t let the eligibility or qualifications stop you from receiving help. I cannot stress enough that there are over a hundred types of grants available in the UK alone, meaning that you have more than one choice if your qualifications don’t meet.
The Local Council have more than just one type of grant as well. If you are a student you may find the local council is more beneficial to your needs than the other scholarships based on your being from that community.
While some of the assistance is in the form of loans through the government you will find the interest rates will be less than if you tried the private sector. With grants you do not have to pay back the money you are awarded. It is free money as long as the qualifications apply. If you suffer from job loss and your family is struggling grants may be the best place to look for help rather than credit cards or even other types of loans.
